(When Di Paolo phoned Manny on his deathbed, he asked, “Who gets the Lexus?”)Īfter Noam took over, a new generation of comedians changed the tone at the table: less hazing and more cell phones, but the same desire for sanctuary. (He once handed out copies of Alan Dershowitz’s “The Case for Israel.”) In 2003, Manny died, of cancer. ![]() He hosted fierce debates at the table, and started a book group. Another ringleader, Rich Vos (“Women Aren’t Funny”), said, “When we left the table, we left shattered and beaten down.” “Me and Keith Robinson would start yelling and arguing about race, or whatever, and we would forget that we were in a restaurant,” Di Paolo said. Regulars also defended the table against comedians who didn’t do standup at the Cellar, were hacks, or were dressed badly. “Any time a civilian would come over and sit down and start talking, we would slowly push that sign in front of their face, and keep pushing it in front of them until they got the fuck up and left,” Robert Kelly (“Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll”) recalled recently. The next night, Manny left a sign on a back table: “ THIS TABLE IS RESERVED FOR COMEDY CELLAR COMEDIANS ONLY.” In the late nineties, one of the regulars, Nick Di Paolo (“Louie”), lobbied Manny to give the comedians their own space. “Once you get used to hanging out with comedians, you really can’t hang out with anybody else,” Noam said. Manny came to love the company of comedians like Dave Attell, Louis C.K., and Colin Quinn. It was installed by Noam’s father, Manny, who opened the Cellar in 1981. “The table” is actually two slate tables pushed together, with a banquette on one side and wooden chairs on the other. Dworman recalled their conversation: “Chris said to me, ‘This is not the table where Robin Williams sat, this is not where Ray Romano sat, this is not where Jon Stewart sat.’ He rattled them off, and each one was like a punch in the gut.” The comedians’ table had recently been moved, to make space for a kitchen extension. The table is permanently reserved for comedians who perform at the Comedy Cellar, a club in the Olive Tree’s basement, which is also owned by Dworman. We’re always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs. One Saturday night last year, Noam Dworman and the comedian Chris Rock sat at the back table in the Olive Tree, a restaurant on MacDougal Street, in Manhattan, that Dworman owns. The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. If you see an Experience Award Winner label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Viator over a 12-month period. You’ll see some experiences with a “Promoted” badge, which means that the operators of those experiences have agreed to pay Viator more to have their experience highlighted. You’ll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them. On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. That’s why we offer many ways to help you find the right experiences for you. Viator wants to make your searches as relevant as possible. It is not necessary to have booked an experience through Viator (or Tripadvisor) to submit a review of an experience to the Tripadvisor site. Tripadvisor reviews that appear on the Viator site are subject to the same checks and moderation processes as set out above. After publication, our team checks each review reported to it as not meeting our publication criteria. All you need to do is click on the link provided in the email. In some cases, we will also send you an email asking you to validate your review before it is published. When the system detects a problem with a review, it may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site. If the system detects something that contradicts our publication criteria, the review is not published. Before publication, each review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information for each of the following criteria: who, what, how, and when. You can only submit a review or rating of an experience to Viator if you were the person who made the booking through Viator. ![]()
